Don Barrozo

Multi-Instrumentalist, Composer, Producer

I was raised in a musical household. My dad played a wide variety of instruments; trumpet, saxophone, mandolin, ukulele, you name it. He would sit watching television, noodling on one instrument or another. That was the soundtrack of my childhood. My parents bought me a trumpet when I was nine years old. I was fortunate to have had teachers who were really passionate. Their enthusiasm rubbed off on me. I grew up in the culturally remote state of Montana, which can be challenging for a young musician. In my hometown there wasn't much of a live music scene so I immersed myself in recordings. I was always going to record stores with my friends, that's where we hung out. I was into everything, lots of rock and jazz. It was the 70's and I loved the music of Frank Zappa, Steely Dan, Tower of Power, the list goes on. The first time I heard trumpeter Clifford Brown I nearly fell out of my chair. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. My musical taste definitely skewed toward jazz for awhile but I never let go of my love for other types of music. I played trumpet and did two tours with the world champion drum and bugle corps The Blue Devils.

After earning my music degree from the University of Northern Colorado, I moved to Los Angeles, having been offered a job at a post production company. I bought my first home recording equipment and began recording experimental music. I burned through a ton of ADAT tapes and got to be pretty good at it. In the 90's, I found a niche doing music for performance artists in Los Angeles. In the mid-200's I performed with many artists including the tribal/dance outfit Shaman's Dream, Jillian Speer and Jacqueline Fuentes. I recorded with indie artist Jill Sobule, worked with producers Susan Rogers and Gardner Cole and composed music for performance art ensemble, Bandaloop. Concurrently, I've been the film editor for long-running television series, "The Simpsons," and have edited independent films and other projects as well.

In recent years, my main project has been Joselyn & Don, my folk/Americana duo with my wife Joselyn Wilkinson. We're preparing to release our third album that was mostly recorded at our home Garden Studio. Our music is available on streaming services, heard on many radio shows and we play live in theaters and clubs. Come to a show!

Press for Blue Talk

“The many styles that Don came so accustomed to in his youth, now show themselves on his debut release ‘Blue Talk’. Most of the compositions lie in the fusion/smooth jazz camp, but very loosely. There are many tinges of reggae, blues, pop, latin and bop scattered throughout. However, it is Don’s playing the makes the most distinguishing mark. His lines are clear and pure, his phrasing even. The warm tone that Don belts out is a perfect lead for the modern sounding music. Production is equally great, lush and easy swinging moods. Although the material is not exceptionally challenging – the music scores on a broader level. Casual pop fans, purists and everyone else will easily admire the great trumpet playing of Don Barrozo.” - Andrew Terplak
